陳茂萱,1936 年 1 月 7 日出生於雲林北港。作品種類豐富,包含序曲、交響曲、交響詩、協奏曲、室內樂、合唱曲、藝術歌曲與鋼琴曲等,其中以鋼琴曲的創作數量最多。其音樂創作的特色即是在西方樂曲形式框架下呈現東方傳統的韻味,其音樂教育的貢獻,則是發展系統性之音樂教材,建構臺灣專業音樂教育基礎。任教於國立臺灣師範大學音樂系多年並曾擔任系主任工作。曾任實驗交響樂團(今國家交響樂團)與實驗合唱團(今國家合唱團)副團長;1983 年,與其學生共同創立「璇音雅集」,定期發表音樂創作。為中華民國音樂教育學會創辦人,並於 1992 年創立「致凡音樂教學系統」。2013 年,獲第十七屆國家文藝獎,表彰他在音樂創作與音樂教育方面的貢獻。
CHEN Mao-Shuen (CHEN Mao-Xuan) is a composer and music educator born in Yunlin County’s Beigang Township on Jan. 7, 1936. He composes music in many genres, including overture, symphony, concerto, chamber music, chorus, lieder and music for piano, with the last being the most profuse. His works is very unique in that he successfully creates a kind of music that is Western in structure but oriental in essence. He also developed systematic teaching materials for music education, which was a valuable contribution to the development of fundamental music education in Taiwan. Chen had taught in National Taiwan Normal University’s music department for many years. He also served as the deputy conductor of Experimental Symphony Orchestra (now National Symphony Orchestra) and National Experimental Choir (now National Choir). In 1983, he formed an organization called ‘Formusica’ in collaboration with his students to serve as a platform for sharing new compositions in Taiwan. Chen founded the R.O.C. Association of Music Education and also formulated the WACH music education system. Chen was awarded the National Award for the Arts by NCAF in 2013 for his creative and educational contributions in music.
