蕭泰然（1938－2015），作曲家、鋼琴家、指揮家；出生於高雄市鳳山區，2015年逝世於洛杉磯。因成長於長老教會家庭，自小即接觸教會音樂與西洋古典音樂，五歲時由母親啟蒙學習鋼琴。畢業於臺南長榮中學、臺灣師範大學音樂系、日本武藏野音樂大學鍵盤專攻科。1977年移民美國，1987獲加州州立大學洛杉磯分校(CSLA)音樂研究所碩士。一生致力於音樂創作，涵蓋神劇、清唱劇、各類型合唱曲、鋼琴曲、交響曲、協奏曲等，他的教會音樂、臺語藝術歌曲傳唱海內外，作品多反映臺灣歷史與土地，如交響詩《1947序曲》回顧二二八事件，合唱管弦樂《玉山頌》歌頌鄉土。他曾獲得國家文藝獎、傳藝金曲獎、行政院文化獎、吳三連獎等獎項；並獲美國加州聖工研究院、臺東大學等校頒發之榮譽博士學位。代表作品：交響詩《1947序曲》、《D調小提琴協奏曲》，藝術歌曲《出外人》、《嘸通嫌臺灣》、《永遠的故鄉》等。
HSIAO, Tyzen (1938-2015) was a composer, pianist and conductor. He was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and died in Los Angeles. He grew up in a Presbyterian family and, as a result, was exposed to church music and Western classical music from an early age. At the age of five, his mother taught him to play the piano. Following Tainan Evergreen Middle School, Hsiao graduated from the Department of Music at National Taiwan Normal University, as well as the Department of Keyboard at Musashino Academy of Music in Japan. In 1977, Hsiao immigrated to the United States and in 1987, earned a Master’s in composition from California State University, Los Angeles. Hsiao devoted his entire life to composing music, including oratorios, cantatas, as well as various types of chorus, piano music, symphonies and concertos. His church music and Taiwanese art songs are popular both in Taiwan and abroad. Hsio’s works reflect Taiwan's history and the land that he loved. Hsiao’s symphony poem, 1947 Overture, recalls the tragic incident in Taiwan of February 28 of that year, while Ode to Jade Mountain for chorus and orchestra praises his native land of Taiwan. Hsio won the National Cultural and Arts Award, the National Cultural Award, the Golden Melody Award for Traditional Music and the Wu San-lien Award. Hsiao was also awarded honorary doctoral degrees from California Graduate School of Ministries and National Taithung University. His major works include the symphonic poem, 1947 Overture, Violin Concerto in D minor, art song The Sojourner, I love Taiwan and Eternal Hometown.
