Transcending language and cultural boundaries, appealing immediately to the eye and the ear, to the literate and illiterate, audiovisual documents have transformed society by becoming a permanent complement to the traditional written record.   However, they are extremely vulnerable and it is estimated that we have no more than 10 to 15 years to transfer audiovisual records to digital to prevent their loss. Much of the world's audiovisual heritage has already been irrevocably lost through neglect, destruction, decay and the lack of resources, skills, and structures, thus impoverishing the memory of mankind. Audiovisual content plays an increasingly vital role in our lives as we seek to understand the world and engage with our fellow beings.  At this time every year, the Taiwan Music Institute joins the grand event in different ways. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we decided to present some precious recordings of Taiwanese music with an online exhibition, which includes the folk songs that had disappeared, a beautiful voice that had travelled around the world, a brilliant composition that was internationally recognized, and the immortal music of a piano duo coming with a romantic story. They did six field researches from 1966 to 1978,  recorded more than five hundred singers, and collected over two thousand precious audio materials mainly from the Taiwanese aborigines, Hoklo and Hakka people. The Arbeit Gemeinschaft China-Europa had funded many SHIH’s projects in Taiwan, including the establishing of first academic music library of Taiwan, and the launching of \"The Folk Song Collecting Movement.\" In order to report the status of the use of funds, SHIH regularly sent the results such as the photos of the music library and copies of the reel-to-reel audio tapes from the Movement to Alois in Bonn. Since the Arbeit Gemeinschaft China-Europa was renamed as the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https://tmi.openmuseum.tw/muse/exhibition/1e6a68f88379ba13863d5cd9c902b267\">Ostasien-Institut</a> in 1969, it has continued promoting the cultural exchange between Asia and Europe. Just when all the scholars were upset with themselves being so careless, another door opened to them.  In 2012, the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https://tmi.openmuseum.tw/muse/exhibition/1e6a68f88379ba13863d5cd9c902b267\">Ostasien-Institut</a> contacted the Digital Archive Center for Music of National Taiwan Normal University, and informed them that there was a batch of historical audio materials of Taiwan, including 56 reel-to-reel audio tapes of \"The Folk Song Collecting Movement.\" The Ostasien-Institut wished to return them and got the assistance of digitizing. All the tapes from the Ostasien-Institut had maintained good quality of playback, credited to the dry climate of Germany and well preservation of Alois Osterwalder, and enabled the folk songs that disappeared for half a century to be heard again. This tape also recorded the whole process of field research that has never been made public in the past, including couple improvised songs made by CHEN, and the most famous ancient tune of Hengchun, \"Thinking About the Past.\"  <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https://tmi.openmuseum.tw/muse/digi_object/5f9c73f58d9199184845c5edce6c8c17\">CHEN Da</a> was born in Hengchun, Pingtung in 1906. He was one-fourth aboriginal. He learned traditional songs of the Hengchun region from his older brother and other local musicians. He was good at arranging lyrics. He sang long, narrative-style songs and also shorter improvised songs, including songs about gratitude and love, as well as songs of encouragement. He also used free open-form rhythms and tempos, singing in a chanting, almost recitative style. He has been given the epithets, \"the self-made bard\" and \"the gem of Taiwan folk music.\" CHEN died in 1981. The recording that you are listening to right now was taken in CHEN's home, as shown in the picture, by ZHANG Jian-Yong.  After understanding the purpose of the visit and interview, CHEN improvised a song about the process of field research performed by the elites of the country, who came to record him, with the intention of making him famous throughout the world. In this tape, CHEN used the strophic form to describe the scenery and legends of the Hengchun Peninsula. The recording you are listening to now is about a place called Maobitou (Cat-like Rock).  According to CHEN’s singing, there is a lighthouse to the east of Maobitou, which is the Eluanbi Lighthouse. He sang that the rocks around the lighthouse have been crying for centuries. The history can be traced back to the Age of Discovery, when the seas between the Eluanbi lighthouse and Maobitou was once the main waterway for all the boats to pass through. However, it was also the area where lots of boats sank because of the rough seas. In CHEN’s story, those who did not know the way all ended up bumping into rocks, falling into the deep ocean, and becoming the rocks that wailed day and night.  What CHEN Da has demonstrated is an ancient method of passing on the knowledge through art that humans have been doing for thousands of years. He lets the world witness the wisdom of the ancients, and hear the voices that have been vanished. Today, we are very blessed to be able to continue hearing this music from the past  through technology, and understand the importance of preserving the audio-visual files of our culture. She has sung professionally throughout Europe and the United States for more than 20 years, and under the sponsorship of the Goethe Institute in Munich (Goethe Institut Muenchen), has  twice toured southeast Asian countries, giving recitals and lecture concerts of Lieder. In recent years, she has devoted herself to the promotion of vocal art in Taiwan. Her publications include books on singing and selected German Lieder albums.  Born in Beijing on March 3, 1938, with Mongolian roots, Phyllis HSI was a natural singer. She started her singing lessons with an Italian American teacher, Elisio Gualdi (1905-?), in Hong Kong, where her parents took refuge in. She recorded this piece in order to apply to study aboard. The lied, Der Wanderer, composed by Franz Schubert in 1816, was based on a poem of the German poet Schmidt von Lübeck. The lyric reflected the vicissitudes of Schubert’s life. He also formed music organizations with an avocation as a painter. He was born in Taipei in 1944, composed his first piece when he was 13. After high school, WEN began study at the Department of Music of the National Taiwan Academy of Arts (now the National Taiwan University of Arts), majored in violin and studied composition with <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https://tmi.openmuseum.tw/muse/digi_object/7d7a7cdf5491b9d53dba1cdc4bb65ac2\">CHEN Mau-Liang</a> and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https://tmi.openmuseum.tw/muse/digi_object/954cd3a438f97a81d997d7f631d8301d\">HSU Tsang-Houei</a>. In college, he mastered in a contemporary technique of music composition, space notation.  After college, WEN joined the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra as the section one violinist. Meanwhile, he kept presenting new works through the Sunflower Music Assembly founded by composer CHEN Mau-Liang, and the Musicking Club founded by HSU Tsang-Houei. In 1970, WEN’s choral piece, Ode of KOXINGA, won the Composition Competition of HUANG Tzu. He then joined The International Society for Contemporary Music as an observer upon the recommendation of the Gaudeamus Composers' Competition. In 1975, WEN’s chamber pieces, Composition 1974 and Phenomena II, were selected for the International Gaudeamus Composers' Competition, and Phenomena II won the second prize, making him the first Asian composer to win that international award. WEN also won the gold medal in the Top 10 Outstanding Young Composers Awards, 1975, the 21st National Culture and Arts Medal, 1980, the WU Sanlian Culture and Arts Awards for composition, 1982.  Let’s listen to a section of the wining piece, Phenomena II.  Phenomena II was a chamber piece for flute, celesta, two cellos, piano, and percussion. In this piece, WEN was able to build a three-dimensional soundscape with diverse textures of all the instruments; meanwhile, he also created a three-dimensional score with a special technique of music composition, space notation, making the score more like a painting. According to WEN, the inspiration of Phenomena II came from the concept of Qi in Chinese philosophy. She learned the piano from renowned musicians like <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https://tmi.openmuseum.tw/muse/digi_object/df24eb748178a43e9eefa31996810626\">WU E-Mane</a>, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https://tmi.openmuseum.tw/muse/digi_object/959ff1006fb827c7e152e5250ef17e81\">Robert Scholz</a>, and Francis WU, was admitted to the Mozarteum Salzburg in Austria based on her music talent, and received a Diploma in Piano Performance, 1975.  YEH then went on to study with the pianist <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http://www.leygraf.com/\">Hans Leygraf</a>, at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Hannover in Germany. In 1978, she returned to Taiwan and began teaching at the Department of Music of the National Taiwan Normal University. In 1984, YEH went to the United States and studied at The Juilliard School in New York. WILLE began study at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Hannover in Germany, 1973, and met his future wife, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https://tmi.openmuseum.tw/muse/digi_object/a78b67a95e4a79aaebbb38ac04fdc153\">YEH Lina</a>, while there. He graduated in 1978, accompanied YEH Lina, and settled in Taiwan. They got married in the following year and started performing together as a piano duo.  In 1984, WILLE went to the United States and studied at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, and earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 1987. He then began teaching at the Taipei National University of the Arts until his retirement in 2020. While in Taiwan, WILLE participated in various concerts and activities as a performer. They then thought it would make the album more interesting if they recorded a work from a Taiwanese composer, besides WILLE’s Danse Des Pagodes. They asked their neighbour <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https://tmi.openmuseum.tw/muse/digi_object/b51a502090aa101f17311ed790de5e46\">LU Yen</a>, who happened to be a composer, to write a piano duet piece for them.  LU Yen finished the Piece for Four Hands in July, 1987, in a ternary form. In the beginning, he constructed the motive with the Chinese pentatonic scale, presented it in counterpoint, and created an atmosphere of ancient China. In the middle section he used sound clusters and complex rhythm patterns to develop the motive into the wildness of contemporary music. The piece, then, returned to the peaceful mood, like the first section. Finally, the music ended in a Zen-like feeling. This piece won the Golden Tripod Awards in 1988. He wrote this piece for electronic keyboard and it became a big hit at the time in Taiwan, and won the Golden Tripod Awards in 1983. YEH arranged the piece, herself, and made it sounded very Mozartish.
