The composition of [Wu She in 1930] is based on the theme of the "Wu She Incident" by adopting the daily ballads of the Tai Ya Tribe in Taiwan for the motif to especially pay memory to such anti-Japanese campaign dedicated to all of the human beings seeking for freedom and peace, domestic and foreign, past and present.
The Tai Ya Tribesmen believe that their ancestors were born from Poso Kofuni (a giant tree) and when facing the struggle against death, they will choose to commit suicide under this giant tree so that their spirits will return back to their mystical paradise. This piece starts with a "largo that is rather reckless" performed by a minor-2 rhythm track formed by low-tone musical instruments and timpani and then the timpani shall play some gloomy melodies
(formed by alternate intervals) to embody the theme of the "Giant Tree" that represents an absolute conflict that implies the occurrence of the Wu She Incident is an unavoidable tragedy.
Next movement connects man (Mona Rudolph), material (Jew's harp: lubu qaw qaw of the Tai Ya Tribe) and thing (Mahebo Cave of Rocks). With a "Largo Cantabile" it zooms out to captures the holistic picture that the Tai Ya Tribe looks like under the ruling of the Japanese with tribesmen singing with sorrow everywhere because lives to them seem like a bottomless purgatory. In the "Andante Relegioso" that describes "Mona Rudolph", this piece attempts to depict Mona Rudolph as the eldest son of the chief Mahebo, when faced with the tyrannical ruling of the Japanese that the tribesmen are bullied and oppressed, it seems that he is forced to make some choices. In this, with Trichord, marimba, and Xindi (II pores) to simulate the Jew's harp to seem to remind him endlessly of the duties and responsibilities that he shall bear as a chief. After the notion of deciding to fight against the Japanese is solidified (here comes the center of the whole piece), the sliding up and down from the piano to comply with the sharp
unison of the band symbolizes his tolerance is reaching to its limit that the revolt against the Japanese is inevitable. Therefore, during the Grand Worshipping Ritual at Taiwan Spiritual Club on Oct. 27, he has taken advantage of the words "Chun Chi Tai" as the signal in the Japanese national anthem at the flag-raising ceremony in the sports meeting to rush into the playground to start a total attack by killing 134 Japanese and that incident shocks the whole Taiwan to hell.
Japanese has dispatched a large army of military policemen to suppress this rebellion and together with "Wei Fang Fan" (a policy of "using the barbarians to boycott against the barbarians to rally the minority of the Tai Ya Tribesmen to form a guerrilla team to start a large-scaled clampdown on such insurrection. Many women have brought their young children to commit suicide by hanging themselves in order to avoid consumption of limited food so that their anti-Japanese warriors can have no holding back to fight against the Japanese. At last when Mona Rudolph feels that the day is lost, he has led the rest of his tribesmen to retreat back to Mahebo Cave of Rocks (largo) with his wife hanging herself in their farming cottage and Mona after Rudolph shooting his two grandsons to death, he kills himself by gun at the great steep cliffs. There are totally 644 deaths of the Tai Ya Tribe for this final battle. Music is back to the "Giant Tree" again because the Tai Ya Tribesmen that died bravely shall return back to their spiritual motherland. Finally he has made some explanation about the musical instruments and their oordination. Piano is played in a manner quite similar to some percussion instrument in this piece that because the composer is interested in its multiple functions and musical natures that he expects to integrate and improve some weaknesses in part of the coordination of the musical instruments. As for Trichord, it signifies it works for both ways that water can carry a boat so can it drown the boat and that means repressive ruling will definitely entail a powerful counterattack. Under the "Andante Relegioso", it delivers the pressures that the Tai Ya Tribesmen have born with a simulation of the sounds of the Jew's harp. And in the Allegro in the sports meeting, a performance with skills quite similar to those from the Japanese Shamisen is herein shows the panic and helplessness of the Japanese and which only occurs in these two paragraphs that will be seen no more when the Random Rhyme of the Chinese Opera in which describes the total deaths of the Japanese after being ambushed is played.
